Scanning

 

Those scanning techiques differ for the Stifle Orthosis. For specific guidelines on stifle scans, please visit this page.


First of all define which pets' leg data you are going to upload: right or left.

Then we can move to measurements, we need at least two types of them.

  • First, we will ask you to make a video scan using WimbaSCAN.
  • The second method is taking measurements by using soft measurement tape.

In addition to that you can attach X-RAY Scan to extend patients info. The more information we get the better.

CAUTION: Measurements are a vital part of the ordering process so please take your time to learn the process. Wrong measurements will make the orthosis not fit well - those are not protected by guarantee.

Since this process might be a bit challenging for the pet AND for you, please make sure to check our videos on behavioral tips and on special cases while taking measurements!

To ensure the Wimba scan process goes smoothly please prepare all needed equipment before the scanning begins.

What you need:

  • WimbaBOX (mat, dolly, sleeves)
  • Smartphone capable of recording HD (1080p) or better quality videos


a) mat

Place mat on an even surface to reduce shake of the video. Floor should be even, rough without carpets. Don’t lay mat on couch, bed or unstable table.

Smoothen the mate to make sure it’s without any wrinkles and waves. 
Printed circles on the mat allows you to place the scanned limb correctly. Colored areas are for our engineers to process scans. During scanning, green and blue areas should be visible.

Keep your mat clean, it is waterproof so you can easily wipe off any dirt.

 

b) AutoDolly

Place the AutoDolly on the mat and adjust it to your patient.

  1. First, set up its wheels.
  2. Use a dotted circle on the mat as reference. Grab wheels and adjust them for the desired radius by giving them appropriate angles.
  3. Push the start button and let it do a few trial rounds on its own.
  4. If all works well, insert your phone.
  5. Stretch the arms of the phone holder to make place for the smartphone, put the phone in and let the arm tighten on the phone.
  6. Let it do another round with it.

The position of your phone determines the stability of the Dolly. If the smartphone is inserted unevenly and is making the dolly collapse, reinsert it a little bit lower, but high enough to not restrict adjustment of smartphone angle or movement of the AutoDolly itself, and try again.

Troubleshooting tips:

Can't adjust the angle of the phone in the holder?

  • Raise its position in the holder.
Dolly collapsing or having issues with riding?
    • Check the condition of wheels,
    • Charge the battery,
    • Lower the phone position in the holder,
    • Consider changing to a smaller phone. 

c) sleeve

Inside your WimbaBOX, you will find three sleeves of different sizes. Choose the one that best fits your patient and place it on the limb you wish to scan.

The sleeve should fit perfectly—neither too loose nor with any wrinkles.
If it’s impossible to achieve that with any of the attached sleeves, you can use a vet wrap (a cohesive bandage). Make sure to choose one that is patterned, not plain. Also, it cannot be in the same color as the background of the video.

 

d) surroundings

Room should be bright, so no shades will come up on the limb.

Be careful about any strong and pointed sources of light: they can cause flashes and make scan unable to process.

 

WIMBA SCAN process

 

1.  Put the mat on the even surface. The autodolly should be placed on the dotted line. Patient’s limb should be placed exactly in the middle of the mat, in such a way that the joint is placed above the indicated point.


2.  Uphold your patient’s other leg and start the dolly. Let it perform at least a few rounds.


3.  Once finished, please check the video. What is important is that:

  • the leg is fully visible throughout the whole video
  • the picture is sharp, no blurring occurs, and especially not on the limb
  • the blue and green parts of the mat are fully visible throughout the whole video

All good? Excellent! You’re good to go!
Some room for improvement? Please, re-do the video.
It’s better to spend some more time on it right now, that you have your patient with you, than to send it to us and have it rejected by the engineers.

Low-quality videos may be rejected by engineers.
Ensure your patient won't need another appointment due to video quality issues.

Perfect Scan

  • Sleeve/bandage must be in contrast color, different from clothes, walls, etc. and needs to have some print on it
  • Sleeve/bandage can't have any folds - it will affect creating 3d leg model
  • All 3 wheels should be on the mat - it absorbs vibrations and makes scan still and stable
  • The mat (especially that green and blue part) should be fully visible during the scan
  • Room should be bright, so no shades will came up on the limb
  • Dog has to stand still for one whole round of 360 degrees around the limb
  • The camera lens should be clean, with no scratches
  • Video has to be in HD or 4K quality, 10-20 seconds
  • Camera has to be focused on the limb
  • Whole limb must be visible on the video from all angles

Uploading the Video


Now, what is also super important is that you send us the scans in a very good quality. We need them to be at least 4K or HD. 

Remember that additional apps, such as WhatsApp or Messenger might compress the videos and in effect impact the quality.


If you need to send us more videos than the app allows you to, do it via WeTransfer or Google Drive to avoid quality drop.


Special Cases

1. Miniature or Toy Breed

If your dog is a miniature or toy breed, you can place the relevant paw on the mat, and hold the dog fully in your hands - this way the dolly will be able to drive around the leg AND the patient. Make sure your hands are not covering the sleeve.

2. Long but Short and Heavy Dogs

The same approach can be used for long but short and heavy dogs. You can position the dog on their front/hind limbs and support them in a standing position. If that's not enough, try bending and supporting all the healthy limbs while leaving only the scanned one on the mat. Remember that this is a position which might potentially result in injuries, so you must safely support the dog and prevent them from putting excessive weight on the affected limb. It may require the assistance of an additional person.

3. Energetic dogs

Assistance from another person can be useful with very energetic dogs who find it difficult to stand still. We realize that holding them in a forced position is uncomfortable and might cause stress - this is where WIMBA Scans are a real game changer! It only takes 10-20 seconds to do the scan. Remember to practice first, and only force the dog to stand still once you are fully ready.


4. Giant Breed

Your patient is too big and the camera has issues capturing the whole of the limb? You can move the dolly further away from the paw or use a wide-angle lens on the camera.

5. Long hair dogs

Please remember that furry patients might require humbling the tail or fur around the scanned leg. If there is too much fur in the picture and it’s covering the scanned leg, you can use an adhesive bandage to keep them away from sight. Remember to use a different one than you used for the leg!
