Carpal orthosis - first fitting

Before placing device on your dog

• Check that all device components are clean and not damaged
• Open straps and locate labels inside axis to be sure placed on correct limb 
  • FL= Front Left
  • FR= Front Right
• Connect the straps on the medial aspect of the device (the side closest to the dog’s midline)
• Check your companion's anxiety level. If you observe signs like lip licking, stress yawning, ears pinned back, or excessive panting, try to minimize their anxiety before fitting the orthotics.

Donning

• Have the dog in a comfortable position for donning and check the limb is clean and dry with no skin abrasions. Note the donning can be in standing or sitting position depending on what is most comfortable for the dog.
• If you have a long-haired dog, ensure the hair is not tucked into the orthotics. Pay attention to dewclaw, pads, hair and other sensitive parts of the limb before fitting the orthotics. 
• Fasten the straps by sliding into the corresponding latch. Do it as you find comfortable, either from the top (closest to the leg and move down towards the paw) or from the bottom (starting at the paw and moving up towards the leg). Move gently but confidently when fitting the orthotics.
• Note! It is important to ensure even tightening on both sides to avoid point loading (same number of clicks on both sides of device)
• When fastening the straps on the Achilles tendon, make sure it is inside the notch of the insert. Gently adjust the insert as needed.
• Evaluate if your dog is experiencing too much discomfort. If you believe the discomfort is manageable, continue the fitting process but monitor your dog’s anxiety level at all times.
• If the only comfortable position for putting on the orthotic is while your dog is lying down, you will likely need to tighten the straps once your dog is standing. Don't forget to check if the orthotic is correctly positioned on the joint.

Check the following to be sure of proper fit

• The brace is in the correct position on the animal’s limb, not too high, too low, not rotated internally or externally, and tokens are directly in line with the joint. Lift paw and bend to ensure tokens are directly in line with the wrist joint and there is no friction between the token & wrist.
• The brace stays in the correct place during the animal's gait, without twisting or sliding down
• The cushions (inserts) are not overly tight and do not compress excessively on the dog’s limb
• No hard elements of the brace (Tokens, Brace Frame) contact the animal's limb during any phase of the gait

Remember that the first fitting must be done at your WIMBA Provider's facility to check your WIMBA device.
